My Company is a California-based organization operating in a regulated industry environment where financial accuracy and compliance aren't optional—they're foundational. The team runs a remote-first operation, which means the people here are trusted to own their work and deliver without being micromanaged. The accounting function is at a meaningful inflection point, with real opportunities to tighten processes, modernize workflows, and build infrastructure that can scale.
About the Role
This Accounting Manager role is a hands-on operational position for someone who has actually fixed a close process before—not just managed one that was already working. You'll inherit a baseline and be expected to improve it measurably: tighter close cycles, cleaner controls, and fewer manual workarounds. In a regulated environment where audit outcomes matter, your work will have direct visibility and real consequences.
Responsibilities
Build and document a formal monthly close checklist within the first 90 days—assigning clear ownership to each step across the team—and drive the average close cycle down by at least 2 business days from the current baseline.
Conduct an end-to-end audit of existing internal controls, map every identified gap to a remediation action, and see those actions through to resolution—with zero material weaknesses surfacing in the next internal or external audit by month 6.
Identify the highest-leverage automation or process improvement opportunity within AP, AR, or reconciliation workflows, lead the implementation, and document a measurable reduction in manual effort and a specific class of recurring errors eliminated—targeting completion by month 9.
Manage the day-to-day work of the accounting team directly: reviewing work, unblocking bottlenecks, and staying close enough to the detail to catch problems before they compound.
Maintain audit-readiness as a continuous operating standard—not a sprint before fieldwork begins—ensuring documentation, reconciliations, and control evidence are current and defensible at all times.
Apply working knowledge of regulated-industry requirements to accounting practices, flagging compliance considerations proactively rather than reactively.
Partner cross-functionally with operations, legal, and finance stakeholders to ensure accounting workflows reflect business activity accurately and controls keep pace with any process or systems changes.
What we're looking for
Has owned a month-end close process end-to-end—including designing task ownership across a team—and can point to a documented, measurable reduction in cycle time as a direct result of their work.
Has conducted internal control reviews or audits in a regulated industry context, identified material gaps, and driven remediations that held up cleanly under external scrutiny.
Has led at least one automation or workflow improvement initiative in AP, AR, or reconciliation that produced a documented reduction in manual hours or error rates—with numbers to back it up.
Manages accounting teams in a hands-on way: reviews work directly, stays in the detail, and earns credibility through demonstrated technical competence rather than title alone.
Has prepared for or directly supported external audits with clean outcomes—no material weaknesses—and understands what it takes to maintain that standard consistently in a regulated environment.
Brings genuine familiarity with the compliance and reporting demands of a regulated industry, and knows how to embed that awareness into day-to-day accounting operations rather than treating it as a separate workstream.
Nice to have
Experience with California-specific payroll, tax, or regulatory requirements applicable to a CA-domiciled entity.
Hands-on experience with a mid-market ERP such as NetSuite, Sage Intacct, or a comparable platform—including configuration or transition work, not just end-user familiarity.
Has built close checklists, control matrices, or policy documentation from scratch rather than stepping into a mature, already-documented environment.
Familiarity with SOX or SOX-lite control frameworks, including control design, testing, and evidence documentation practices.
Benefits
Fully remote position with flexibility to work from anywhere in California.
Competitive compensation commensurate with demonstrated experience and impact—specific range shared during the interview process.
Direct ownership over meaningful accounting infrastructure improvements, with visibility to senior leadership on outcomes.
A regulated-industry environment that will sharpen your technical skills and broaden your professional credibility in ways that generalist roles don't.
Opportunity to build processes and documentation from the ground up, leaving a clear mark on how the accounting function operates going forward.
Collaborative remote culture that treats accountability and autonomy as complementary, not competing, values.
